How smuggling gangs use drones to deliver drugs across the border
Fox News' Alexis McAdams reports on how the NYPD is managing protests in New York City since the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in Israel. Drones used to be fancy gadgets for hobbyists or secret weapons for the military. But now they have a new job: delivering drugs. Yes, you heard that right. While El Pollo Loco is using drones to bring you chicken dinners, some bad guys are using them to smuggle drugs across borders.

Man who used drone to smuggle drugs into US sentenced to 12 years in jail, officials say
Agents found Jorge Rivera in possession of 13 pounds of methamphetamine in Aug. 2017 when he was trying to use a drone to smuggle drugs across the border. A 25-year-old man who was previously arrested after using a drone to smuggle drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, border officials announced. A jury sentenced Jorge Rivera on Wednesday after he was convicted last week of trying to traffic 13 pounds of methamphetamine into the United States during the summer, according to a release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rivera was detained on the night of Aug. 8, 2017 after a border patrol agent saw a drone flying across the border near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the original arrest report said. An officer later reportedly located the suspect who was operating the drone and found him in possession of a bag containing "multiple plastic-wrapped packages containing methamphetamine."

Drug cartels using drones to smuggle drugs at border
AUGUST 2008: Border agents recovered this 2-foot-high drone that was seen swooping over the border fence in southern California. Drug cartels are using unmanned drones to carry drugs across the southern border, challenging the U.S. technological ability to stop the advance. Brandon Judd, an agent and president of the National Border Patrol Council, warned that the border patrol does not have the technology to contain drones. "The number is just astronomical," Judd told The Washington Times. At least 13 drones believed to be carrying drugs were spotted in November alone, agents said, according to the Times.

Drones flying into prisons to be examined by new police team
The Prison Service and the police are to pool intelligence to tackle the problem of drones flying drugs and mobile phones to prisoners in jails. They will forensically examine captured drones to try to find out who was flying them. The invention of easy-to-fly, remote-controlled aircraft has caused a huge security headache for prisons. The national initiative will involve police and prison officers from all around England and Wales. They will share information about the types of quadcopters and methods used, in an attempt to curb the problem.
